Learning Format: Why It Works

Why does note taking and self-learning work only for studying coding and nowhere else?

Keynote:  it is the subject of studying that defines the method and format of learning.

What Skill Learning Is:

1) Acquiring information (theory)
2) 2. Attempt of application (action / practice)
3) Evaluation of the result achieved
4) Correcting actions in case of a mistake
5) Getting a correct result
6) Revision

When you learn coding, you can read instructions or watch a learning video by yourself. After that, you open the environment and craft a code. Often, even at the code creation stage, the environment itself notifies you about errors. Should your code have no errors, you launch it and either get an error report or a result you had planned to achieve. A computer feels absolutely nothing if you make a mistake. It doesn’t accumulate irritation when you fail over and over again. You can make corrections until you get the correct result. In other words, result evaluation is performed either by a student (you see what you failed in) or by the environment (before or during code execution).

If you study other subjects involving interaction between people (arrangement of deadlines, agreements, conditions, and consequences; problem statement and control; feedback; behavior pattern correction; motivation — almost all the activities involving people in spoken or written form), such a learning model is inappropriate.

Why? It’s all because you will pass stages 2-6 with a person, who always responds and reacts, who can be tired and accumulate their reaction (you cannot come with the same question time after time), who has their own work that can depend on how and whether you agree or not.

Watching video lessons with the illustrative demonstration “how to solve Problem A using Method B” helps to solve Problem A using Method B, but it doesn’t always help to define the Problem correctly and then choose the proper solving method. It’s only practice and revision that can imprint skills in defining a problem correctly and choosing a proper way of solving it.

You can experiment with the code and frameworks during coding, learning by the trial-and-error technique, getting back to watching videos and flicking through solutions found in Google.

However, you may not set up any experiments when solving real problems or tell an angry customer “let me google it for a minute, and we’ll start over”. Most possibly, you will be fired or asked to keep away. By the way. To hell with experiments on humans! It’s cruel!

If you study something concerning people and interaction between them, please abstain from methods of learning you are used to applying previously, in your professional development.

We would not like you to get trapped by something like a previous example — you will get nothing with a “cut-and-try” approach to studying communication, motivation, and other life issues (considering business and money).

A mistake in communication or an incorrectly formed project budget can send you back a few years or even put an end to your career.

Wait, but what about books?

Reading does make you smarter. Reading is essential. We love books.

Reading books on bricklaying will help you to build your first fireplace in your remote house. But if you wish to make money on crafting fireplaces, you do need practice, real skills, and a master who can replace 200-500 books.

Do not replace learning with reading or watching videos. Don’t be trapped by such a way of learning — especially if you studied coding previously.
